Cliff Rescue Howth Head

Late this afternoon the Coast Guard emergency operations centre received a call reporting a tourist trapped on a cliff edge 50 meters above a beach at Whitewater Brook on Howth Head.

Howth Coast Guard Cliff Rescue team and Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 116 were tasked.

The tourist, who was in his 30s, had got confused coming back up the path from the beach below and ended up trapped unable to move with a steep drop below. Two Coast Guard members were able to communicate with the casualty and keep him calm while other team members were setting up a cliff rescue team to lower a rescue climber.

Shortly after the Coast Guard helicopter arrived and lowered a winchman to the tourist and successfully recovered him to the top of the cliff path. Coast Guard medics assessed the man who was a bit shaken but otherwise in good health and very thankful for his rescue in what could have easily had a very different outcome.

Person in Water Howth Harbour

Howth Coast Guard were tasked early this morning at 05.36 to a report of a person in the water at Howth Harbour. The unit responded but were stood down soon after as the casualty had been quickly recovered by Howth RNLI. Dublin fire brigade and ambulance service were also in attendance. The casualty is recovering in hospital.

Gas Cylinder

Howth Coast Guard were tasked today at 14.00 to investigate a report of a gas cylinder in the water at Clontarf. Local volunteers responded and recovered the cylinder at Clontarf Yacht Club slip. It was handed over to the City council for disposal.

Cylinders like this can be a danger to shipping and damage boats if they are collided with.

Young Scientist Exhibition RDS

Volunteers from Howth Coast Guard unit and one from Skerries Coast Guard unit were on hand manning the Irish Coast Guard information stand at the Young Scientist Exhibition being held at the RDS on Saturday. Coast Guard members were giving out information and promoting water safety to the attendees.

Killaloe Coast Guard unit had their underwater ROV on show for the full 3 day exhibition which proved to be very popular with the visiting public.

Volunteers from Greystones and Dun Laoghaire were present on the stand on Thursday and Friday.

Incident Updates

On Friday night Howth Coast Guard were tasked to check a report of a flare sighted off Portmarnock strand. Volunteers locally responded and after a search with nothing to report the unit was stood down.

Incident 04/15

On Saturday morning Howth Coast Guard were tasked to Longwood in Co. Meath to conduct a sonar search of the River Boyne. Gardai and local Civil Defence were conducting a search for a missing person. The sonar response team left Howth at 06.30 and returned at 17.00.

This morning at 06.45 the team responded again and in conjunction with Killaloe Coast Guard unit who responded with their ROV the units conducted a search of the river. The teams were stood down at 13.00 with nothing to report. Gardai and Civil Defence are continuing their investigations.

Howth Coast Guard & Howth Lifeboat was tasked this morning to assist Dublin Fire Brigade with a body recovery in Howth Harbour. Howth lifeboat personnel recovered the body. RIP.

Dog Rescue

This afternoon the Coast Guard operations centre received a call reporting a dog trapped on cliffs at Balscadden Beach in Howth.

Howth Coast Guard Cliff Rescue team were tasked. The dog was located 4 meters above the beach and had become trapped after exploring. Following attempts to rescue him by the public the Coast Guard were called.

The Team used a ladder to get to the dog and brought him back to the safety of the beach. The dog was in good form and returned to his owner.

Dollymount - Recovery

This afternoon Howth Coast Guard and Gardai were tasked by the Coast Guard operations centre to a report from a 112 caller of a body on the north end of Dollymount Beach. The team recovered the body off the beach and it was handed over to Gardai. Rest in Peace.
