30/4/2014

Comments

Howth Coast Guard were tasked last night Tuesday at 23.50 to a report of a car stuck in the sand on Dollymount beach. Two members of the unit went to the aid of the car and removed it. They were stood down at 00.53.

We would like to remind people that the CG may not respond to cars stuck in sand. We would also like to ask people to avoid the beach at the wooden bridge end in cars at the moment as the sand is very soft.

Earlier today the Irish Coast Guard Operations centre received a call that Trixie, a one year old Springer Spaniel Pup was trapped on the side of a Cliff at Deer Park on Howth Head with the owner unable to get to her and very concerned for her safety. While out walking Trixie had managed to run away from her owner and fell down about 10 feet to a narrow ledge, below the ledge was a further 30 feet steep drop to the ground.

The Coast Guard Cliff Rescue team from Howth were requested to assist. The team set up a Cliff Rescue and lowered down one of the Rescue Climbers, Robin Blandford to the dog. Trixie had some initial concerns over who this new arrival, dressed in bright clothing and a white helmet, was joining her on the ledge. After some gentle talking to an apprehensive Trixie by Blandford, the skilled canine negotiator, with promises of doggy treats below she slowly warmed up to her new
friend. Trixie was then brought into the comfort of the Coast Guard “Doggy Bag”, a very low technical device to stop the dog and rescuer from getting too close on the descent.

Trixie was reunited at the bottom with her delighted owner and the team returned to the station.

2 tourists Injured on Howth Head Cliff Fall.

5/4/2014

Comments

The Irish Coast Guard emergency operations centre received a call before 5pm today (Sat) that two tourists had suffered a fall while climbing the cliffs at Lion's Head in Howth, Co Dublin. The operations centre immediately tasked the Coast Guard Rescue station at Howth and Coast Guard Helicopter from Dublin Airport, an ambulance was also requested to attend the scene.

Members of the Coast Guard Cliff Rescue members from Howth station quickly arrived on scene and observed a male teenager screaming for help and stuck 20 feet from the top in a very precarious position with a risk of a further fall very likely, a rope was lowered to secure him to his position until the arrival of the Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 116. The Helicopter Winch Man managed to quickly rescue the casualty and take him on board the helicopter with minor injuries.

At the same time it was realised the second casualty had fallen 150 feet down the cliffs to the beach below. Coast Guard medics attended the 2nd casualty and stabilised him. A HSE Advanced Paramedic was then lowered by the Coast Guard team to the casualty below to provide advanced life support. The second casualty was then taken into the Coast Guard Helicopter and brought to Tallaght Hospital for treatment. We wish both casualties well in their recovery.
