At 4am this morning the team were tasked to assist Gardai with a search in Howth. The person was located quickly by Gardai and the unit was stood down. Incident 51/14 Howth Coast Guard were tasked at 15.30 on Friday to facilitate a landing at Beaumont hospital by Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 115 which was en route from Galway with a patient. A team assembled and went to the landing area at the hospital and cleared the area for a safe landing and patient transfer.
While at the landing area waiting for the helicopter the unit received a request to go to Portmarnock beach to locate a missing child which became separated from it's mother. The team split and the majority of the team went to Portmarnock in the unit's van and a Garda car leaving a core to assist with the patient. On arrival the child was quickly found safe and was reunited with it's mother. Incidents 49/14 and 50/14 Incident update. Last Thursday Howth CG were tasked to Malahide at the request of Gardai to speak to a jetskier causing problems in Malahide estuary. On Saturday Howth CG were tasked to speak on boating safety to the occupants of a rowing boat that was assisted by Howth Lifeboat back to Howth harbour after being lost in fog. Incidents 47/14 and 48/14 This evening (14/7/14) the Coast Guard emergency operations centre received calls about a swimmer injured while jumping off rocks at Balsadden in Howth. Members of the Irish Coast Guard Cliff Rescue team at Howth were quickly on the scene and began to administer medical treatment to a male. He had suffered a back injury while jumping off 30 feet cliffs into the water. Further medical assistance arrived with Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics from Kilbarack, the two agencies worked together to stabilise the patient. The Coast Guard helicopter from Dublin Airport, Rescue 116, arrived and winched the casualty up and evacuated him to hospital. Jumping off high structures like bridges or cliffs into the water is jumping into the unknown with tides changing and unknown debris beneath the surface. There is risk of serious injury or worse. Incident 46/14. While training this morning on the Howth cliffs the team were advised by a member of the public of a dog who had collapsed. A member from the team located the dog and his owner on the lower cliff path half way between the Bailey and Balscadden. One of the more unusual casualties to be carried in the stretcher the dog was recovered to the summit by the team where a relieved owner placed him in his car. Speedy recovery from the team! Last night (Monday 30/6/14) Howth RNLI lifeboat and Howth Coast Guard were tasked by the Dublin Coast Guard operations centre to an person needing assistance on the east pier in Howth. Both teams mobilised, for the 2nd night in a row to discover this was a another hoax call.
If the services were required to a genuine call at the same times lives could be lost as rescue assets were tied up. Gardaí are now dealing with matter. Incident 45/14. |
