Tasked to Prepare Landing Site

Howth Coast Guard were tasked today at 14.00 to prepare a landing site for Rescue 118. The National Ambulance Service had requested the Coast Guard to medivac a casualty from Castlebar hospital to Beaumont in Dublin. The unit assembled and went to the site beside the hospital, checked it, secured it and awaited arrival of the helicopter. The unit kept the site secure while the helicopter was on the ground and the crew performed the casualty handover at the hospital. The helicopter and crew departed at 1645. The team was back on station at 17.30.

Howth tasked to Sandymount to investigate person in danger of being cut off by tide on Saturday 21st. After further information received Dun Laoghaire tasked as it was closer unit.

Search for Emergency Locator Beacon

Howth Coast Guard were tasked on Tuesday at 19.00 to search for the origins of an activated marine emergency beacon. It had been picked up by aircraft landing in Dublin airport and after a search the IRCG helicopter had pinpointed it to the Sutton area. The sea was searched but nobody in distress was found. The helicopter then found the signal was coming from the land. The CG unit searched the shore and checked with householders for accidental activation but nothing was found. Howth lifeboat was also tasked to search the area but found nothing. The unit was stood down at 20.00

Person in the water, Balscadden Bay.

Just after 5pm yesterday (Friday) members of the public reported a shore angler had fallen into the water at Balscadden Bay in Howth.

A full scale response was launched, co-ordinated by the Coast Guard operations centre. Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 116, Coast Guard Rescue station at Howth, Howth RNLI ILB and ALB lifeboats, Dublin Fire Brigade along with Gardai responded. The search continued until darkness and was then called off to resume at first light.

Starting at 5.30am this morning the search resumed along the coastline and surrounding beaches. The Garda water unit also joined the search; when the sea swell dropped the Garda divers were able to dive and they located the fisherman. His body was brought back to Howth Harbour with the assistance of Howth lifeboat. Our condolences to the man’s family. May he Rest in Peace.
