Irish Coast Guard - Howth Unit

Skull Recovered

2/12/2014

Picture
On Sunday morning at low tide a member of the public came across a skull in the sand while out walking on Burrow Beach in Sutton. This was the start of a mystery that has yet to be solved; with the tide coming in Gardai were unable to locate the skull and the Coast Guard were requested to assist. A Coast Guard boat crew who were on the water were tasked but also couldn’t locate the skull. That evening at the 10pm low tide teams of Gardai and the Coast Guard began a search of the shoreline, shortly after the skull was located. A further search located a bone, possibly human.

A Coast Guard team light up the area and a professor in anatomy and physiology along with the Garda Technical Bureau attended the scene; the skull and bone were taken away to be examined. Following examination yesterday it was revealed that the skull has been deceased for over a hundred years, the bone located was an animal bone. The skull was identified as a young adult female, there’s no more information as to who this girl is, what her circumstances were, where she was from, details of her family.

With a case so old that predates the formation of the state there’s no further investigation by An Garda Siochana to be carried out. State scientists will continue to examine the skull over the coming months to see if they can get more details. One of the more mysterious calls that maybe one day will be solved.
