Incident Date & Time: 16/04/17 15:00
Situation: While on exercise the Irish Coast Guard boat from Howth was alerted to a drifting Kayak with no one on board on the south side of Irelands Eye. The crew initiated search procedures and alerted the Dublin Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the situation. The Howth RNLI boat inshore lifeboat, also on exercise, were monitoring radio communications and responded to assist.
Within 2 minutes of the Coast Guard crew being alerted to the incident 2 causalities were located standing on top of an offshore rock, sound of the island. The Coast Guard boat made an approach and recovered the causalities that were unharmed.
While this incident had a happy result, the outcome could have been very different. Neither of the kayakers had any communications or means of signalling for distress, only for a passing tourist boat spotting their drifting kayak no one would have been aware of their dangerous situation.
Assets Tasked: CG Boat (Howth), RNLI ILB (Howth).
