Last night the 22nd Dublin Mafikeng Cub Pack visited Howth Coast Guard station as part of their Bronze Arrow badge. As part of this badge they have to learn what an emergency is, who to report it to and how to report it as well as learning to respect the Emergency Services and their importance.
During their visit they got to learn about Howth Coast Guards abilities as a fully equipped cliff rescue team. Everyone got a chance to have a look at all the teams climbing and first aid gear. The volunteers also showed them around the station and the vehicles including the units boat. The boat is primarily used as a patrol and compliance vessel but acts as a response rescue boat available for tasking when afloat.
The cubs also got to watch the Coast Guard safety video outlining some basic safety rules that should be followed while out and about around the coastline, on the beaches and while out at sea.
The cubs enjoyed their evening with us and the unit would like to thank their leaders for bringing them along! If you in the area and have a scout unit or youth group and would like to visit us, drop us a line and we’ll be happy to have you visit us.
The most important message that the cubs went home with last night was:
If you spot someone in trouble at sea, on the cliffs or coast, even if you ‘think’ that someone may be in trouble , dial 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
