On Sunday last while out on patrol involving lifejacket compliance monitoring the Howth Coast Guard boat ‘Grainne’ was called for assistance in three incidents.

The first incident happened in Sutton Creek where a 25′ yacht had grounded in a falling tide. 2 adults and 4 children were aboard. The crew on Grainne set up a tow and managed to free the yacht after several attempts.

On passing the Nose of Howth while returning back to the harbour Grainne came across a drifting ski boat with a damaged engine. 2 people were on board so the boat was taken in tow back to the safety of the harbour.

While in the harbour closing up for the day Grainne then received a call of another yacht grounded this time at the beach on Ireland’s Eye. The crew went quickly to the scene as the tide was falling and they knew they hadn’t much time to free it. There were 4 adults and four children on the yacht and a number of attempts were made to free it but unfortunately the boat could not be shifted. Three of the adults and the four kids were then taken back to Howth Harbour with the owner staying to refloat the boat on the next tide.

Altogether Grainne was out for four and a half hours.

Incidents 29/08, 30/08, 31/08
