Four Fishermen rescued from rocks at Howth

At 0415 this morning Howth Coast Guard were tasked to go to the aid of four fishermen who were reported on the ‘Puck’s’ rocks at Balscadden. A 999 call was received from a local householder and also an EPIRB signal was activated. They managed to make it there after their 15mt vessel ‘Crystal Sea’ sank after striking the rocks when returning to Howth harbour from a fishing trip. Howth Lifeboat was also tasked and was on the way.
When the Howth CG volunteers arrived on scene they could see from above the four men down on the rock. Howth team members made it to the rock below along with the crew from the inshore lifeboat. The Howth allweather lifeboat dispatched their small onboard craft(Y boat) and this had made it to the location. The onstation ILB boat was also tasked to the scene and the casualties were removed by the inshore boat out to the larger allweather Lifeboat and then transferred back by the lifeboat crews to two waiting ambulances back at Howth harbour. The casualties suffered no major injuries other than being cold from exposure in the water. Howth CG were stood down at 0530.
Later at 1300 Thursday Howth CG boat ‘Grainne‘ was launched at the request of Dublin MRCC to maintain a watch over the vessel for pollution control. Grainne’s crew also managed to place a marker buoy on the sunken vessel to allow for further investigation.
