Howth Coast Guard were tasked tonight at 1825 to a report from a member of the public of a youth clinging to the cliff at Balscadden Bay and in immediate danger of falling. The volunteers assembled quickly at the station and proceeded to the scene. The Irish Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 116 from Dublin Airport was also tasked to the incident. A Dublin Fire Brigade crew was already on scene and had located the casualty half way up the cliff in an area hard to access from the road above. The youth had tried to ascend the cliff but had got himself into difficulty and he could not get to safety.

The Coast Guard unit found an area with the help of a local householder in a garden above the casualty where a cliff top recovery could be set up. The rescue climber had begun to descend to the casualty when Rescue helicopter 116 arrived on scene.

In front of a large crowd of onlookers on Balscadden beach the helicopter quickly dropped their winchman to the casualty below and recovered the youth all while hovering close to the cliff edge. The CG unit stood by at the top in case Rescue 116 had difficulty in recovering the casualty. He was then removed to Dublin Airport with no injuries. Howth CG recovered their climber and stood down.
