On Monday morning at 0750 Howth CG were tasked to a yacht which had run aground on Claremont Beach. Volunteers went to the beach to find it had broke away from it’s moorings outside the harbour entrance and had drifted up onto the beach behind the west pier. Nobody was on board at the time.

The Yacht was later removed on a high tide by a crew from Howth Yacht club.

These yachts are purely there to save the owners the bill of HYC or the outer moorings in Howth Harbour… Its a pity your time is wasted dealing with this , if a real incident was to occur, your response time would be affected and could even cost a life ,…. hopefully the owners of these yachts will take note and might consider mooring there yachts in a better location they are lucky none of them ended up on the west pier… Keep up the good work it is great after all the years to see a dedicated Coastguard Search and rescue station in Howth.

What an uninformed an negative posting that is!

Actually, the owners of boats on those outside moorings are not there by choice, or to save money. In almost every case they would much prefer to have their boats inside the harbour, but sadly it is deemed to be full - Howth needs another marina to enable more boats to be within the safety of the harbour walls.

In the event it was Howth Yacht club marina staff who took the risk of boarding this beached yacht in rough conditions, and the Coastguard who helped later, we’re certainly not taken away from a valuable life-saving operation, nor was that a possibility.

Thanks Guys for your comments in relation to the CG. The Howth Unit are only too happy to and will always respond to a tasking no matter what the situation. Fortunately in this incident there was nobody on board and thankfully maybe only the pride of the owner was damaged. The CG could really only stand by and make sure the owner was aware of the beaching and that the vessel did not cause any more damage to itself or to anything else. Two volunteers stayed for most of the day to keep an eye on the vessel. Well done to the marina staff who removed the yacht, conditions early last week were not good.
