Howth Coast Guard boat was launched today (Bank Holiday Monday) to carry out normal operations of lifejacket monitoring & patrols. While leaving Malahide estuary the team received a radio call from Dublin Coast Guard Radio asking to assist in the rescue of a reported capsized canoe in the Baldoyle Estuary.
On arrival at scene, the team recovered a baby, child & adult from the water clinging to a swamped canoe. Having been submersed in ~9c water for 15 minutes, they were taken on-board and treated for hypothermia on-route to Howth RNLI Lifeboat Station, who we’d like to thank for great effort between organisations. All three casualties were taken by ambulance to hospital.
Please remember the advice given last week,
- Carry a means of raising the alarm, should you get into difficulty.
- Check the weather and tides - if they are unsuitable, do not take the risk.
- Do not exceed your own capabilities or that of your craft.
Weather conditions: Small craft warning in operation, West to southwest, becoming westerly, force 5 to 6 but occasionally force 7.
