An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern paid a visit to Howth Harbour yesterday as guest of the Harbourmaster and local community. As part of the visit he called into the Howth Coast Guard station to meet some of the volunteers and see the station facilities. He was made welcome by the Area Officer and took tea and chatted to the assembled crew. He was impressed with the set-up and complimented the Howth volunteers on their dedication and commitment to the service. He remarked on the fact that Howth Coast Guard unit is the busiest unit in the country and that the volunteers give up valuable time to serve the community.

Howth Coast Guard are delighted that An Taoiseach took time in what was a busy day for him to drop in and visit the station and crew.

Greetings from the green (sort of this dry year) state of Oregon, USA. I enjoyed your website. One question; who is An Taoiseach? I presume he is a government official. Hope to hear back soon. Thanks. Ray Rishel.

Thanks for your comments Ray. ‘An Taoiseach’ is our Prime Minister and leader of the Government.

Thank you for your response Colin. My wife advised me she had deleted an e-mail with a strange title yesterday. Iwas pleased to find your response on your station’s website.
Twenty years ago, I worked as an “Advanced Life Support” EMT with the hospital based ambulance service at Tillamook on the Oregon Coast. We responded with local fire department rescue teams, and occaisionally with the US Coast Guard lifeboats from Garibaldi or their helicopters from Astoria.
Later I worked as a paramedic in the Portland metro area, and then as a disaster response volunteer with the Portland Fire Burea. Sometimes I miss those days. Enough reminiscing. Take care. Ray Rishel
